As I may have mentioned (many times) TIE Fighter is
one of my favorite game s of all time. Since I had acquired my new joystick and had no flight sims with which to try it, I turned to my old faithful TIE Fighter. First, however I had to get it up and running. I had tried previously to run it in compatibility mode, none of them worked. Fortunately, I found other methods. I decided to go with the DOSBox method, as I’m lazy and it seemed easier. You can find the DOSBox method here, and the other method here. Now I do have the Collector’s Edition CD-Rom, it seems that does have an impact on which methods work for you to get it up and running.
After installation and much reminiscing about boot disks, DOS and other early to mid 90’s gaming nostalgia (press any key…remember that?! What game has that anymore?!) I was ready to go! Let the credits roll, and midi music play! Ahh the nostalgia! Unfortunately, I had forgotten one thing. It seems the largest resolution the game had was 680×460 px. Yes, you read that right. Remember when 800×600 was a decent, large sized monitor? Yeah I do too. Unfortunately my monitors are modern. The smallest my oldest monitor goes is 800×600 leaving plenty of room around the edges. At least I could still see things better though!
There was another issue: my joystick. I tried calibrating it in game. I tried calibrating it out of game. I tried calibrating it in game even more times. If memory served I did have issues with calibration not sticking back in the day. However, nothing I did matter. My cursor had a mind of it’s own traveling always to the upper left corner. This made flying slightly difficult as I always had to compensate for the miscalibration. Unfortunately, I can’t even find my old joystick (who last saw use when playing TIE Fighter, probably) and even if I had it, I lack the converter to use it on my laptop.
In spite of these issues, it was awesome to play my old favorite game once more! SO MUCH NOSTALGIA!
Have you gone through great lengths to play your old favorites? Share your experiences in the comments! (And if you have any tips to get my joystick to behave while playing TIE Fighter I sure would appreciate that too!)
