SWTOR’s latest expansion, Galactic Starfighter has been released today for subscriber’s early access. Naturally I was super excited to try it out. After a surprisingly short amount of patching I was in game looking at the starfighter customizations, types, armaments and companions. Purple engines? Oh yes.
Not seeing any type of messages about controls for the starfighters I decide it’s probably in my best interest to do the tutorial. I was right. The controls are….terribly disappointing.
No Joystick Support
Yes, a flightsim with no joystick support? What is this madness? Am I playing in DOS? Why would I want to play a flight sim with the keyboard and mouse on a PC? It’s just not as good. It’s just not! I mean there’s a reason I don’t play flight sims on consoles, it’s the lack of a proper joystick.
The problem is, the mouse has both very touchy sensitivity (because for some reason you have to aim with it) and very vague sensitivity (because you also have to steer with it). This makes it very annoying to get the hang of. I really wanted to lower my mouse sensitivity, but there’s no option for that.
Good Old WSAD
Normally WSAD are directional keys, similar to the arrows or the number pad. No, not this time. It controls engine speed (uhh, LPT Bioware that’s what the + & – keys are usually for) and some abilities. However, you can change the keymapping so this isn’t really a huge deal. Change all the keys if you want!
Yey! Right?! No…not really. If you were excited, like me, when you heard about new companions and your head filled with thoughts of new companion quests and all the fun you’d have together…. Well, it’s not like that. Your new companions just get a little picture and a blurb about them. No intro, no interaction, no nothing. Your current companions don’t even reflect any of their current customizations, which I found kinda odd and jarring. Torian…I don’t remember you looking like that! >.> My Torian doesn’t look like that.
QQ MOAR. You Don’t Need a Joystick, No One Uses Those Any More!
Joystick > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard > Game pad for flight sims. It just is. Also, just because something supports another controller, doesn’t mean YOU have to use it. It just means me, and others like me, can play how they prefer.
I really was hoping Glactic Starfighter would be half as good as TIEFighter (high hopes I know). Or just a half decent space flight sim. At this point I really have my doubts. I really do not like the controls. I mean it’s fine if they think we should play like that. But really, I don’t want to..it’s just not how flight sims are played. It seems to me like a flight sim made by people who have no idea what flight sims are like…or should be like. Maybe with more play time, I didn’t play long, just enough to know that it’s not what I expected, or wanted from it.
So anyone know any good flight sims to play?
